We left Mama Lydia's at 5:30am on Friday morning to catch a couple of matatus into the city. We were supposed to meet the group at 7:00 AM, but it took over 3 hours to arrive at the meeting place! But hey...we're in Kenya - "you get there, when you get there".
The first stop was a "field school" in an area called Naivasha.
A volunteer from Australia started it up a couple of years ago. It is called Karibuni Children's Centre (KCC) and the children come from a nearby slum. The "school" consists of 2 screened-in buildings. They have play time and are served one meal a day called "ugi", which is very watered-down, sweetened oatmeal, served in a cup. For most of the kids, this is their only meal for the day.
We first got to play dodgeball with them...
then did some art... and then helped serve the ugi.
The environment was beautiful with its fields, trees and distant view of mountains - a sight for sore eyes after working all week in the Korogocho slum!
After the kids ate their porridge, it was time for entertainment!! The first song was "Happy Together - Happy Forever". The second song was the best version of the "ABC" song I've ever heard. Unfortunately, I only only caught half the song - it starts at "IJKL".
Well....after a few frustrating hours, I wasn't able to add videos to my blog, nor Facebook. You'll just have to wait until I get home.
Take care all!!
